About the owl
About the owl
The tawny owl (Strix aluco) is approximately 38 cm from beak to tail tip. The breeding population is estimated at 6,000 breeding pairs. In winter, the population can increase to 18,000 birds.
A striking feature of the tawny owl is its round head (without ear tufts) with large dark eyes. The tawny owl is an inhabitant of older, wooded areas with preferably as varied vegetation as possible. The tawny owl can also be found in parks and large gardens. Because many old and rotting trees are being cut down, the traditional nesting places for this owl are disappearing. Tawny owls therefore make grateful use of our nest boxes that replace natural nesting places in a good way.
